To the Beach House
Beach House's latest album Devotion, with a pair of great headphones, is enough to make you forget about the world and calm your mind. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally's soft and dreamy voice echoes along with the gentle tambourines, guitar, drum brushes, soft shakers and long organ chords.Their last album contained less percussion, causing most of the music to sound washed out. Devotion has just the perfect amount of crisp for a clear, but still dreamy and fantastic sound. "Wedding Bells," "Holy Dances," and "Gila" are outstanding tracks.
They're simply charming and I adore this album.

Best Part of London Fashion Week So Far
Fat and smiling Coco Rocha with Ultra-Hipster Henry Holland and Agyness Deyn in antlers, an EYEPATCH and possibly the fugliest tartan wedding dress (?) at the House of Holland show.Fucking. Amazing.

Observing the Queen in Her Natural Habitat
I had the most fortunate opportunity of attending a few shows this season.
Marc by Marc: Watched Fergie sit uncomfortably with her huge-ass sunglasses on throughout the entirety of her attendance. Rachel Zoe was photographed and interviewed NON-STOP. Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue was there as well. The Brit-pop 80's punk-rock inspired clothes were hot as hell and will undoubtedly be a success when they hit stores this Fall. I'm definitely getting myself a pair of the patent leather strap buckle boots.
Zac Posen: Saw Miss Jay sit third row incognito, then chatting it up with Andre Leon-Talley after the show. Karen Elson fall, or sit, gracefully and perfectly into her white layered chiffon finale dress, into the center of the runway, thanks to Zac's choice of impossible platform heals, then P. Diddy (investor) and Caroline Trentini (model) help her up. Anna Wintour walked past me in a fur collar waist-jacket and magenta water-treated taffeta dress, then SPRINT out, with her new man toy running after her, once the lights came back on. Rachel Zoe again, Carine Roitfeld again. All the hottest models of the season walked the show. The clothes, though, resembled the fashion of the 18th and 19th Century too closely, therefore making most of them seem too costume-y.
Finally, went to Marc Jacobs Collection (last show of Fashion Week) and boy did he and KCD Worldwide put on a show. The Armory was filled with over 1300 people. Every seat had a Sonic Youth Marc Jacobs beach bag containing a t-shirt. Champagne, popcorn, M&M's, nuts and Fiji Water were served by cute boys in Sonic Youth tees. The runway was in stage-format, with the band's instruments and amps set up. Stacey and I walked into the Armory behind Selma Blair in her insane rhinestone dress. Shortly after, Anna Wintour walked in sporting a fur coat on top of a red and navy plaid taffeta short-sleeved sheath dress. Andre Leon-Talley arrived after her (of course) in a suit and beanie hat. M.I.A. (!) also attended, sat front row next to Ellen Pompeo, Gretchen Mol, Robert Duffy and Victoria Beckham (!!!!!!), who was the heartthrob of the press (duh). K. Fed was directly across the stage seated front-row, though I'm not sure why. Marc himself walked out twice around stage and motioned for the show to start (he actually started only 20 minutes late this season). The performance by Sonic Youth was great. The models walked onto a scaffold above the stage and waited for the end of the show. The clothes. Well you should read the professional opinions tomorrow morning. The best part was the Rachel Zoe was denied entrance to the show and threw a tantrum at the bouncers! So does that make me like, kind of her superior?

Ys PLEASE
The Joanna Newsom concert is, by far, the most incredible performance I've ever attended. She performed at the Howard Gilman Opera House with the Brooklyn Philharmonic tonight and the show was sold out hours after tickets went on sale early January. There were about 20 violinists, 2 cellists , a drummer, 4 different types of flutists, a xylophonist, 2 trumpeters and Michael Christie to conduct. IN ADDITION to the orchestra was Joanna's huge Lyon and Healy pedal harp that was at least 6 feet tall and 4 feet long, and her own 4 piece band which includes another drummer/vocalist, a banjo/brass/tambura player, and a violinist, also vocalist.
The first half of the concert was the performance of Newsom's 2006 album, Ys, a reflection of her life during one particular year. The songs are more than 10 minutes long, with "Only Skin" lasting a whopping 17. Ys is the first album Newsom wrote and composed with an orchestra and complex, long compositions and narratives in mind; she collaborated with Van Dyke Parks for orchestration. Not only was her voice beautifully unlike anything I've ever listened to, but being in her presence, watching her hands glide so fluidly over the harp strings was entrancing; for over 2 hours, I was completely lost in her performance and captured by such an enormous voice from Newsom's tiny body. She performed all 5 tracks of Ys with the orchestra, wonderfully, and resulted in several of my fellow surrounding audience members crying, especially during "Sawdust & Diamonds," when all members of the orchestra lowered their instruments to observe Newsom's intimate performance with only her voice and harp.
After a standing ovation from all 900-something audience members for the orchestra and Newsom's first half of the concert, and a brief intermission, Newsom and her band came back on stage with a change of clothes and continued the performance with some old and new songs. Among them were: "Balloons and Bridges," "The Book of Right On," "Inflammatory Writ," "Peach, Plum and Pear," "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie," and 2 of which are without titles yet.
Her band then bowed and left the stage after the third standing ovation of the night, and Newsom performed another new untitled song with her Lyon and Healy. After the final standing ovation, Newsom returned for an encore performance of "Old Man Standing" with banjoist Kevin Barker.
Tonight was Newsom's final orchestral performance, forever, and last concert for a few years. I'm in love.

Very Exciting News: Monday I'm taking Jasper to Little Marc's fitting because he's gonna be a model!!! What a star! Then Marc by Marc is Tuesday afternoon, Spice Girls Wednesday evening, Zac Posen Thursday afternoon and Marc Collection Friday night. I don't have enough time.

Yelle-ing!
School has started for about a week now and so the posts won't come as often anymore. I expect more work this semester; the instructors are a lot more knowledgeable and tough. Most of them are pretty damn fabulous.
Eh, not much to say except this time around.
Recently I've been really into hard-hitting electro-rock (?). This French band, Yelle, has a pretty good album called Pop Up. The lead vocalist is female, and that adds to a "cuter" sound, kind of pop-py and kind of cheerleader-ish. "Tristesse/Joie" is my personal favorite track, with its slower tempo, echoing synth and steady rap and awesome buzzing dance-worthy interlude toward the end. "Je veux te voir" and "À cause des garçons" are other outstanding tracks but some of tracks fall a bit short because of their very slow tempo and almost mainstream pop sounds. Generally, though, they're a good listen.
Some other new electronic bands I've been into:
Boys Noize: for those of you who don't think Justice kicks hard enough
Midnight Juggernauts: a bit more house with subtle freestyle and 80's new wave influences, a good listen
Crystal Castles: Nintendo sounds and screaming

Bad Pattern
It's like 3AM and I should be sleeping, but instead I'm listening to Chromeo and reading La Blogothèque. They have some pretty cool exclusive recordings from artists like Jose Gonzales, Sufjan, Menomena, a LOT of Beirut, etc. etc. Anyway, j'adore que le blog est en français.
Speaking of which, I've been giving Paris more thought lately. We'll see what happens; it's kind of 40/60: there's no point/I really should. Paris is the center of the market that I'm very interested in pursuing, and I should go, even if it's for the experience. Then again I wonder if I'm in way over my head. We'll see, we'll see. Just thinking outloud here.
